Hello,

Cleaned up the detector and took it for an a.m. swing. Found the crank for some unnamed fishing reel in the yard. Also found this tack-like thing that has '31' on it...what is it? I think i've seen these before but dont know what they're for? Got some clad, zents and older, but no wheats.

Haven't done a lot of detecting lately. Going to do more soon. But I have been panning pay dirt...I live in the wrong state lol.

Thanks for looking!

Jarl

Hi Jarl. Those are some nice finds. I believe the "31" item is the head of a nail spike that they use to drive into telephone polls the year that they were inspected. That would indicate 1931. In the 1940's - 50's, they went to the aluminum tags that you see on the polls today. I found a 27 and 31 with the shaft intact, and didn't know what they were, until I ran across an old telephone poll that was being replaced, and still had a few in it. Check the back to see if there is a mark where it looks like it may have snapped or deteriorated the shaft off of it.

Actually, those small numbered tacks were used to mark which screen went to which window back before AC. You would take down the screens in the Fall & put them back up in the Spring. In the past I have had old houses with the numbered screens still stored in the basement. (Yes, I'm old!!) :laughing7:
