6 coppers from this site & a 1773 half reale.very quiet at this site but, when you hit a good target its old.also got this piece of unmarked silver.no clue what the heck it is or was.looks like it was repaired at one time.rang up in the quarter range.thought it was gonna be another coin

better luck next time:laughing7:

Dave, wow, wow, and wow, another great year! OK, I think you hit a good one this time. I am not 100% certain, but will get it verified that the NJ you found is a Maris 58-n, a rare variety. Now let me say this, Conn coppers are rare more than common, thus it is not unusual to find rare and very rare Conn coppers, but when it comes to NJ coppers, since there are less varieties, a Rare variety is really special. Especially since I started my survey 7 years or so ago. Out of the approx 275 identified NJ coppers in my survey, only about 9 have been Rarity 5 or higher. So very glad to see this one, especially since it is the only M.58-n in the survey. Please email or pm me with the county and state.

1787 New Jersey Copper - Maris 58-n Compare and see if you agree......

Dave, I didn't think you could break your "Captain Copper" record from 2011. Now, I think you just might. Love the buckle. HH, Quindy.

Amazing that many coppers. You sir are the king of copper at least on this side of the pond. Nice finds all of them!

Congrats HMN, looks like #70 is a rare one! If the weather holds off looks like you might get to 100

We can always count on a copper from you ! I bet all of those coppers make a very impressive pile:headbang: I will be watching to see if you beat last years totals.

thats a sweet copper!:occasion14:

Dave, got the verification that it is a 1787 Maris 58-n variety, late die state, (die break in front of the horse). I would go ahead and clean it carefully, get the crud off if you can and than perhaps we can see some of the most likely undertype. It appears the 56-58 n varieties were overstruck on Conn coppers I believe the reason that was done was because the NJ coppers were worth more than a Conn copper, so you take a Conn copper and strike over it with a NJ die and you made profit!

Dave, the coin is what the coin is, I think you know how your coppers in the area are in general and just bad luck on that coin. Sometimes it is best to start with just a q-tip with distilled water or even peroxide and pick out an area you think might be bad and if it is you will know before doing the whole coin. But you did good on having good before photos, where the crud was holding most of the original details in place, but that is all it was doing, it was not solid coin under some areas of the crud. :( Blame the soil conditons, not yourself.

Your mistake was rinsing it under the water after you were done. If you don't, the patina stays.

For the sake of learning a lesson I have to disagree because I know for a fact I could have cleaned it and had it looking better than the top pics. As I said the mistake was rinsing it because I have probably cleaned a couple hundred coppers, got the crud and dirt off, and kept the patina. His usual condition is exactly what I have to deal with here, and most times it's just trying to salvage a coin the best you can. All that said, the coin obviously had issues and the cleaning and keeping the patina was just about eye appeal... something that does make a difference, but certainly wouldn't add a zero to the value!
