After yesterday's great barber half find I was going to take a break today but the detecting bug woke me up early and said lets go, and sooooo glad I did. I have found many rings over the years but not any that I can really brag about, till today! Was going to head to my barber lot when on my way there I took a different route about 5 minutes away from it. Passing thru a neighborhood that dates back to the early 1900's when I seen one of the homes had recently been tore down and a empty lot was screaming at me to stop. After a very slow start and a few wheats and a mercury dime later I was thinking, not as good as I thought it was going to be, than bam! A strong 81-82 on my At pro, dug down about 4" when I seen it, still not sure what I had till I picked it up and realized I found my best ring ever. Looks from the style to be from the 1920's, Amethyst and diamonds and is 10k marked. Taking to Jewelers this week for cleaning and appraisal. I am one happy guy.

I'm glad this topic come about. It really makes me appreciate the acres and acres of beautiful hunting grounds I have at my disposal. I live on a river and get to watch eagles flying on a daily basis. I know every area has it's advantages and it's downfalls as well but being immersed in all of this nature and undisturbed wilderness is truly a blessing. I have a lot of respect for you guys that have to fight for every piece of dirt and site just to be able to swing your machines. If either of you ever get to the northeast if love to take you out to some of the stunning coastal sites that I hunt.

Just a few examples of what I see on a daily basis. Keep doing what you do fellas. I wish you guys all the best out there!

Ahab, the one thing we do have here in Vegas is beautiful sunrises. This was taken this morning on my way to hunt. Couldnt even imagine hunting in your places. Spectacular scenery! Even if I did not find anything the peace alone would be my treasure.

Ray that is absolutely stunning! You're dead on with the peaceful comment. It's just a more relaxed pace of life here. Everybody smiles and says hello and neighbors help eachother without being asked. Don't get me wrong, I do love going to the city for some fun once in awhile but it always feels great to come home. I will say it's not very fun sitting here for months without being able to detect. It's a trade off. We've got some very old stuff here but we can't get to it for 4 or 5 months of the year. And it looks like you've got some great jewelry and coins and great weather all the time. Maybe I should buy one of those foreclosures fit the winter months Ray :-)

Alexandrite changes colour under fluorescent light it goes a greeny colour amethyst does not. easy test. If it changes colour , then you got a nice find. Few Alexandrite stones are available hence the value so hi.

Gorgeous ring, what a fortunate find. You said you were taking it to a jeweler last week. Did you find out anything?

Someone mentioned alexandrite. Alexandrite is a color changing crystal depending on the light. If you view it with mixed window light and incandescent indoor lighting, the color should appear to change as you turn it.

One thing making me think it may be a vintage ring, besides the old coins you found and the 4" depth of the find, is that there is no hallmark inside the band...unless there is one.

10k is usually not used with very valuable stones. I agree with you, the main stone likely is amethyst as you surmised, and the baguettes are probably something like clear topaz.

It could even be a modern ring, it could have been buried 4" when the site was demolished. Here is a website selling antique style gold rings with Russian CZ's. Your ring appears similar in style to the one they call "deco" style on this page Wedding Sets, Engagement Rings, Bands Cubic Zirconia Jewelry, CZ Rings in 14k Gold, Engagement Ring. I found this website a few weeks ago while looking if anyone made 14k gold rings with cz's. They do, though this company uses high quality Russian CZ's, which cost several times what ordinary CZ's cost.
In any case, a beautiful find.

My sister is a lawyer, and a very straight arrow. I've asked her about this very question concerning hunting private property without permission, and she would never endorse hunting a lot without the owner's permission, the reason being that whatever is on that property belongs to the owner of the land...period. Legally speaking, this ring belongs to the bank, if that's who owns the property.

But, in my experience, custom and usage can be legitimate counterweights to the law, we see that all the time. Abandoned property on unfenced, unposted land is considered by many to be fair game, and of course, villainous banks are considered fair game by most people in any case.

There has always been a certain whiff of piracy associated with recovering lost property: wrecking or salvaging, and in modern times, metal detecting. This is inevitable when you recover property that was lost by other people and keep it for yourself. It does get a little dicey, in my opinion, when you don't get permission to hunt private property. Personally, I find very fertile ground hunting public right of ways, public beaches and parks. That's not to say I haven't wandered up on occasion onto inviting unfenced, unposted private lots. But, I was aware when I've done it, that I had dropped down the scale of legitimacy in doing so, and perhaps for that reason, I usually returned to the public right of way pretty quickly. Technically, you could be busted for stealing from the owner of the property, and it has happened.

While I understand where you are coming from on this how far do we go into this and draw the line? I guarantee all of us has hunted parking strips that have either belonged to the city or even private owners (businesses). And if you take it a step further parks are also owned by another entity which if we look at it all things found on there property belongs to the city as it is also being found on there property.i am all about getting permissions if obtainable in which I have hundreds of times but I also have openly hunted lots here for the last 20 years without one incident. I have always felt that I have strong ethics and have been a good example toward our hobby And have always left it in better condition when I left removing trash, needles, broken bottles and cans. As I said before its not always about the treasure which is nice but it is also about saving history that is more important. But im sure alot of people wont agree with me on this but its what I detect and I will continue to do so. Thanks for the input and I respect you for your strong stand on this.

This really is a tough topic that could be argued for days. Basically every piece of property is owned by someone whether it be the town, the state or the bank. Technically if you find something in a park it could be argued that it should be turned over to the town. We have several public wildlife areas here in Maine that are either town owned or land trust owned. These places are open to hunters who take game on the property and people who pick flowers and gather pine boughs to make wreaths. Should I not be allowed to keep an old coin if I found it but still haul tons of trash out of there?
I look at it like this. Would the town be happy if I showed up at city hall with a sack of pull tabs and old bullets? Probably not. So I'm not gonna give them my Large Cent either after I cleaned out all that trash from a public place. I believe Ray knows what's acceptable in his area. I also believe the banks would be fine with some random person going on the property without permission and picking up the needles and beer cans and whatever else might be left on a vacant lot. The drug dealers and vandals are the ones that should be concentrated on. Not the guy who's trying to be respectful and clean up a bit of his area. Obviously the cops don't seem to have an issue with it. They're worried about the rapists, murderers and drug traffickers as they should be. Not some stand up guy cleaning up trash and on rare occasion finding a coin or piece of jewelry.
While I respect everyone's desire to do the right thing and I believe most of us are representing this hobby well, I think if lawyers really wanted to dig they could find a reason for us to technically not be allowed to dig or keep anything from any site that we don't personally own. I wish everyone the best and respect everyone's views. I am hoping this doesn't turn into a huge debate. Ray knows his neighborhood and I truly believe he's doing a service to his community!

Thanks Ahab. Very touchy subject. But I thank you for your opinion, input and understanding. This is a tough one for me.
