Congrats on your button. If you don't mind I have a couple questions about it. Is that a black coating on it or is it just dirt? And, can you tell what backmark is on it?
Casper, The great seal button design dates from 1902, although the older buttons on really ancient uniforms did see some use in WW1-they emptied every army uniform warehouse outfitting the trainees. You've got some of those pre-1902 "angry chicken" buttons there in your photo. You've also got an empty 30-40 Krag case too I think, and oddly a WW2 "US" collar disc.
Congrats on taking that one off your bucket list. Military finds are always a welcome site under my coil. Since its a 1902 Great seal button, it could also be from WW1. There are some slight differences in the style, and the back marks. With a little internet research you can confirm which War period it may have been from.
Thank you all for the information, I'm assuming it's a WWll button, the property I found this on is owned by a WWll vet, he said he lost a couple buttons when be came home on leave in 1944. But, his dad was in WWl when he purchased the property, so it could be either. I'll have to research it and find out for sure.
Fyrffytr1- its just dirt, tiny bit of gold coloring on the back edge, the back is too crusty to see any makers mark.
Let me share with you a little bit of info somebody here on treasure net gave me the other day, after I found a Great Seal Button:
Great Seal Buttons came out in 1902. A rim was added in 1910, buttons from ww1 era were black or gilt (golden) from 1910-1917, black only from 1917-1923, and gilt only from 1923 and onwards.
What does the back of yours say? Any manufacturers marks could help date it. There is a thread somewhere here on Treasurenet that lists the button manufacturers and the time period in which they are made. If I find it Ill post a link here. You might be able to find it yourself by searching "Great Seal Button identification" or something along those lines.
