MY HOME MADE SLUICE BOX.

this is my home made sluice box made out of a plastic rain gutter, expanded metal, some regular carpet with ridge pattern, a nugget catcher made out of the things off of a cooler (not sure what they are called), under that there is some rubber with riffles, and i have main riffles made out of thin aluminum. i have a auto parts washer that i prop it up in and it makes the perfect wash plant NO MESS! so far i have found a few nice flakes and i catch a lot of black sand but i feel i need improvements any ideas or complements would be great. Really need improvement ideas

i have a camera with 1700 times zoom it is pretty much a microscope camera

here is a hi powered up close pic of my flake...say what you will but i know it is gold

All those straight fracture/crystal lines on it tell me it's not gold. Sorry dude.

damn talk about a excitement killer i did press real hard on it with metal tweezers and drug it around my pan could that have caused the fractures maybe??

Ya, no. Gold is too soft to end up with those crisp straight lines. Sorry but you have mica. Keep panning!

here it is all the hard work finally paid off still have a few days of cleaning out my black sand to get the rest of the flakes out and mini nuggets out of the quarts

i need your opinion i found this in the same material i found my flakes in it looks like gold stuck in a rock

i am hopeful that it is gold i have heard of it being in rocks like this.

Looks like pyrite to me ( iron sulfide )
Pyrite can be silver, gold, shiny, dull whatever.
There's a reason it has the nickname fools gold.
I've heard it can have a small amount of gold in it but I've smashed enough to not believe that.
Every piece I smash I keep waiting for Mother Nature to teach me a lesson but she is a fickle *****.
I know the day I quit smashing it I'll miss a huge hunk of gold and I'll be the fool that tossed it out.

Pics are way out of focus, but yep, from what I can see it looks like Pyrite to me, too.

i have heard that pyrite will break if i smash it with my finger nail and i broke a few chunks off and tried to smash it and it was super solid...i can take and upload a better pic if needed just let me know

After having built and tested several sluice designs, I suggest if your looking for a clean up sluice, please consider a miller table. It will function much better than the design you have. Your design would be better suited to stream use to produce your cons. again you would need to seriously increase the water flow and I would further suggest going with a flat bottom instead of the curved. The curved pipe will tend to over load the riffles at the bottom of the curve thus allowing some gold flakes to flow right out of your box. over all your on the right track, but remember if the object is to catch gold you need to 1. move lots of material ( bigger is better) and 2. Think miller table for separating your gold from the black sand. Nothing works better that I have seen. Props for building your own equipment, You are a man after my own heart.

poke it with a sharp needle, gold is soft it wont chip
