I went back to one of my favorite stomping grounds today in search of more Civil War items. Instead, a lot of aluminum foil and this name plate. At first glance, I was excited about the find, but after numerous inspections, I believe it to be a semi-modern dog collar tag or something similar. I couldn't find a ruler. so I had to use my LAST dollar for a size comparison. Oh well, I had fun looking!

I think you are right about it being a dog tag/name plate.
I found one similar once and showed it to the land owner. He was a elderly man and the property was his home place. Turns out it was the name tag of the dog he had as a little boy and he really liked it, needless to say I let him keep it.
