Sixty-four dollar question now : Are the edges of any of the three lamellar blades retouched (re-sharpened for cutting or for scraping) ?

one is retouched and polished on the bottom edges the others are still razor sharp from being struck off the core,these came off a documented mound that was excavated in 1927 in portage county ohio site #33po1 ,i was lucky enough to salvage some of the material when the local historical society museaum was auctioning off alot of the artifacts [they are more interested in glass and cast iron from my area]

I need to participate more on this board. Here is one of my favorite hopewells. I didn't find it. Came from Clark County, Ohio(Southwest), and last sold at the Max Shipley auction in 1988. It is made on a curved flake that produces a unifacial area on the back and a great twist/curve. I thinks its just about dead 4" of great Flint Ridge material.

Jeff,

Purchased a family collection found North of Indianapolis several years ago. This monster hopewell was in the collection. It is a little shy of 6". Stubborn little bit of black ink on the back. It is the 2nd best piece of flint I own. Pretty cool that the Flint Ridge travelled over to Indy. As you can easily see in the pics, it is old and correct.

weird how the bigger hopewell blades are far from the main hopewell centers of southern ohio,i've seen a few big blades like that from my area but you dont see them from down south that much

Nice Hopewell culture stuff guys, some killers in there. There is probably a couple points in here that aren't Hopewell, the bladelets are all fridge from Ohio.

Hiya Jon, love that piece. One of my favorite personal found Hopewells was also made on a large spall that wasn't flaked to the center. In fact, have found several like that, from just a few locations though.

Hey, question. On the Hopewell sites up there, do you find any "Hopewell Picks"? They are usually pretty large, 5-10" in length. One end of them is crude, often with the cortex left on. Then they are flaked to a tip on the other end and remind you of a cross between a drill and a Kerrville knife. They are common on Hopewell sites here to the southeast and I was curious as to if they occur with any frequency up there as well?

The drill/kerrville combo doesn't ring any bells. Can you show me a picture of one?

Jeff- The fact that the larger Hopewell blades seem to be found outside of the heart of Hopewell country is a known quirk. In fact, your part of the state has more larger blades than anywhere. When I find Hopewell pieces(Southern Ohio), they are almost always the small form, and I can only think of one larger broken one I have found in the 20 years of surface hunting I have under my belt.

These are both from southern Ohio, didn't find them but they are really nice material. The first is from Hamilton Co. OH, the next one if I remember correctly is from west Of Dayton Ohio. sorry the pics are not the greatest. Scott

Here's a picture of a tray of Woodland/Hopewell artifacts all collected from the same site. I found this site a few years back and it produces Woodland culture artifacts only. I haven't found any Archaic pieces there as of yet. I also have a box full of of grit tempered Pottery Shards from this site. Some of the pieces in this tray are pictured in my post above.
