I was looking over my merc dimes tonight, and I have one 1916. Its seen better days, but I was thinking I hadnt looked really hard for a D mint mark. I assumed it had been wiped if it had one. I took out my loupe and my eyes might be playing tricks on me, but I think i see something. Doesnt quite look like an S. What do you guys think?

There is some probability. Question, is the die rotated?

No, no no no no! Even with an extremely worn coin, you don't do anything to it. In that condition it's worth a lot. Send it to a attributed! Don't tamper with it!

I say you have a very SLIM CHANCE of a 'D', Go to a coin dealer or a jeweler that has a High Powered microscope to check. Good luck on the roll of the dice 50/50 !!!

I think your photos are good enough. Send it to either one, pcgs would be preferable.

I agree but since it has been harshly cleaned, they will only Certify it as "Genuine"! Per chance, they may also note on the label "AG-3 Details".

Frank

A certification of genuity would be cool with me! A lot of people have a 1916 D merc on their bucket lists, including me. Itd be thrilling to know i dug one and can have it autheticated for my collection.

Also what signs are you seeing that it was harshly cleaned? Personally i only rinsed it with water after digging it. Next to other dimes it does have a milky appearance.

In the first pic at the top, the coin has the appearance of having been been scrubbed and also having been treated/cleaned with acid. While some staining shows on the Reverse, the lack of toning and dirt is usually a give away to coins having been cleaned.

Its certainly possible someone boogered it before i came across it.

Pictures were taken with same camera phone except first picture i used a clip on magnifier. If you or anyone else wants any different pictures of a close up or otherwise just let me know. Its all fun for me.

First you need to establish that it's a "D", then you need to establish that it's genuine, not altered. If you have the chance to attend a major coin show, you might get a dealer knowledgable enough to authenticate it for free. Otherwise, you'll have to pay to get it authenticated.

Lots of altered 1916D's out there; many were done decades ago. If it's a dug coin, I'd say chances of it being legit are good.

Good luck!

If you look closely at where the MM is on the Merc Dime and at the Rev of the dime in question, I would find it very hard to believe that this is not a 1916d Dime. For a dig, wow amazing. And yes most likely cleaned. It is an AG-3 at best still worth a nice price.
