I was in AC today MDing on the beach. I pulled a couple of nice keepers. I am including the pictures. The first is a Silver spoon by J.Russell & Co. The spoon is marked 1834 J. Russell & Co with a sort of up arrow thing. What I have found out is J. Russell was in business from 1832 to 1922 until the business was washed out by floods. Is the 1834 the year the spoon was made or the year the design was first produced. The second is a hoop thing. The hoop is brass and hollow with a tiny hole at the top. The hoop measures 2 3/4 round and can be opened to pour out what ever is inside. It has a structure close to black powder cans I have found while relic hunting. Yes, there were coins there too. Pulled out 74 coins in about 2 hours as well as lots of buckles and pieces of copper. Any help on these two items would be great. Thanks for the help.
Terry

Cool finds,

the yr marked on the spoon is most likely the yr it became a pat. pending as most are - is it solid silver or does it seem to have overlay flaking off with copper showing thru?

A LOT of silverware from that time period was "plated" - solid silverware is hard to come by even from the 1800s

There is no flaking. That does not mean that it did not flake off. But the spoon is not marked plated and the spoon is definately not copper inside.

Hi Terry

Nice finds.

What is "AC" that you were in? Is that a location in Pennsylvania or some other state?

Thanks for showing us your finds.

I believe AC might be Alantic City NJ.. as for the spoon if it is solid silver it would have to be marked Sterling or 925 or 950 to be solid sterling silver... any marks such as A1 ,AA, word triple or quadtruple an such would be plated even if not marked with the words plated ...

Thanks Creeper that makes sense now. I racked my brain trying to figure out what AC might mean. On Slashdot.com it means Anonymous Coward. But now i understand in reference to NJ. Thanks again for the heads up.

Yes, I was in Atlantic City New Jersey. I also was over in Brigentine for about 4 hours. Brigentine was famous for the Brigentine Castle haunted house. Brigentine was better for coin count but I really think if you are looking for silver you can find it still in AC. Limited modern finds though.

Well, at least you found something! My wife visits AC regularly and she tells me once in a while when looking out her hotel window down at the beach she'll see a THer swinging along and she feels sorry for the person 'cause they look so lonely and they're not doing much stopping and kneeling and/or scooping.

I plan to go with her possibly in May so now someone looking out their hotel window will see me and possibly think the same thing about me, or not. Of course, my wife will be inside the casinos taking her chances with the slot machines and she's good!
