New Foundation Yields Gold

Went to a new foundation that I located last year. Within two minutes of being there I found a 1935 wheatie and a gold ring. It is stamped 18K inside, even though it looks silver. Then I found nothing for almost an hour, then I get a big signal in a ton of brush. I swear it took me 20 minutes to move all the brush and vines out of the way before I could start digging. I dig about six inches and its still in the hole. I knew it wasn't trash, so I dug twice more and out comes this nice buckle. Any ideas on age? Then I got the spoon, which is not silver or anything special.

Your ring is made of brass. Before the "Gold and Silver Marking Act" of the early 1900s, anything could be stamped with a Karat mark. Such is the case with your brass wedding band, which was originally gold plated. They are fairly common finds at sites ranging from Civil War campsites through mid-to-late 1800s house sites and work camps.

I went back today to get a few pics of the foundation to show you how hard it is to get to. I'll post them up a after dinner. Just to show how much I like you guys on TNet, I got 5 ticks on me to get three pictures.

Here's the pics. The ones showing the side I almost fell in. The side was about 7ft high. Prickers everywhere, and I mean the big, sharp ones that go deep into your skin. It's a good thing I'm still small enough to fit into all these tiny areas.

I found a ring like that that was stamped 18K too. The edges were perfect like a current wedding ring and I couldn't figure out what I had until a friend informed me of the "electroplated" rings from the Civil War era. That's still a nice conversation piece!!

I hope you find some good things in that hole!! You have to get something for all the pain.

you can tell if it's gold by the way the dirt just falls off when you pull it from the ground.
