So I dug this copper strip thingy yesterday at a late 1800’s house. I almost tossed it, but I saw something engraved into it.
It says:
NEW HOME
PAT’D JAN’Y 9

Not sure if there were other numbers after the “9” or not?

It measures : 3.5” x 1.25”
and is made of copper.

As you can see, there is a half moon looking cutout and two small holes too.

I know it’s a long shot, but WTH.
Thanks for any input,
MM

‘New Home’ was a sewing machine manufacturer in Orange, Massachusetts between 1882-1930. I didn’t search extensively without a year to go on, but they were granted a patent for design improvements on 9th January 1883, although I couldn’t see any parts illustrated in the patent which look like that. It might be some other part of a machine incorporating that design improvement, or there could be another patent with a 9th January date which they utilised but wasn’t specifically assigned to them. If it is from one of their machines, I would think it would be brass, not copper.

Just a query: How did you arrive at this thought?
