1786 New Jersey Copper Question (PIC Added)

Recovered what I am 99% certain is a 1786 NewJersey copper yesterday. There are several variations of this coin , some quite rare and valuable.
The one I have is in pretty bad shape. How do I decide whether its worth having cleaned and graded? What does somthing like that cost to have done?

Thanks for any responses in advance!

For those with ctx dis was wide open this coin came in at 12 45

Pics?? Pretty bad shape? I would say that uless it's a very rare one it's not worth having it graded. Post a pic and the guys here will ID the variety if they can. I see you don't post a location...where was it found? I'm guessing RI based on your handle. :dontknow:

Depends how bad. If it's too rotted to determine the variety you don't even have a starting point. If it just needs to be cleaned to remove some corrosion that can be possible and you can easily do it yourself. Sometimes you don't need much detail to determine a variety if what's exposed happens to be in the right areas of the coin, but of course there's many we dig that are too far gone. A picture would probably tell the story of what kind of chance you have.

Just seen the pic... try a peroxide soak with some brushing but I'm not very optimistic. Looks like it's too far gone.

The edges look to be already gone, but there looks to be some great detail in the middle, but it would require careful cleaning to reveal...nice find

That coin can probably be attributed if you try and remove the crud where the letters are, first, try wet qtip and gradually try to remove the dirt directly above where the center point of the shield is, particually where it looks like letter U is close to that point, then try the same thing where it appears letters are closest to the outer points. If I can see the relation of those three points I can probably ID the variety, yet alone the year.
I have no idea why you think 1786, unless the other side has detail, so please post a photo of the Horse head/plow side which is also the date side. Please PM me with county and state found in for my ongoing NJ circulation study....

Added: No need for worrying about sending the coin anywhere for grading. Clean it to your satisfaction and enjoy the fact you found a piece of history in getting a NJ Copper.

There are a few shields that are so close , but right now without any further pics, I am leaning towards a J reverse, which could be 1786 or 1787, depending on the Obverse, most common one would be 1787 M.34-J but need further details to say with confidence.
