Relic Hunting
I have came up with a new thread idea called The Hunt which every member can outline and bring up how they got started and what made them decide which type of metal detecting (relics, coins, gold) that they are using now. I would like everyone to write what year and how what their first find was that got them connected to this hobby. I don't think this will ever be a major thread like the magnet fishing one that BWD came up with but I've always been interested in seeing what got everyone to where they are today.

A little about me if I may as an example:
I started this hobby 23 years ago as something my father got myself and my twin brother involved in to look for coins and civil war relics. We moved from springdale to lowell so he could be closer to his job plus get into the Broiler farm business. The farm in which he bought he did a great deal of research on and found out that in the surrounding area there was a large confederate camp, a few skirmish sites, and a decent sized Union camp. Wasn't long after we moved there my brother and I got our first detector. It was a piece of junk Radio Shack machine with a little needle indicator and a red push button pinpoint switch. Needless to say it didn't take long for me to find out all of dad's research was spot on because on that very 37 acres he bought was a massive union camp. My first find was a .69 minie ball I found in 1993 and I was a barefooted kid not expecting to find much and when that bullet came out of the ground I was so excited to show my dad who was out in the chicken houses working I ran directly into the chicken house barefooted stomping through chicken crap to show him my "amazing" find. From that day forward I've been stuck on civil war relic hunting and research like glue. My brother and I would go with dad to different civil war sites and he always taught us how to bring us something to put our finds in and label them so you know where they came from later on. Well still to this day I could take out them bullets, buckles, buttons or cannon frags and tell you when and where I got them at.

Fast forward several years I got married and started working as a police officer and still enjoyed the hobby every chance I could. Few years went by and going dad and I and my brother were still going out and detecting new places and places we had from the beginning still shocked that there never is a truly "Hunted Out" site. We stopped going together and as often since our families didn't get along that great (mainly my wife) and I lost connection with them for a bit. Well years passed and I was going through a divorce with her and had to sell my beloved detector. I felt lost and empty without it. It had been 20 years that I had owned one and for once I was without a detector and it felt eery.

Times changed and with ex wife in the past dad and brother and I got back together hunting and enjoying times like we used to. We began looking at newer places to hunt and had found many nice things along the way. Well just as we had started making new plans and had high hopes on the ultimate relics we would find tragedy struck our family and dad was killed in an accident. It was several months before anything even remotely seemed ok enough to even do anything and my brother and I went on a memorial hunt for dad. Finding many things we wished we could have shared with him but still happy to have one another.I've learned one thing in my time that life will always throw you a curveball but you just have to keep your eye on the ball and watch for that perfect pitch.

So now I'm a newly married man again. Living the dream I've always dreamt of and making many friends along the way. I hunt almost daily and get on TN because this truly is my extended family. We all have our differences some time and our ideas may not be the same but what family doesnt;) I want to personally thank Treasure_Hunter and the other mods for always keeping this site open and available anytime I need to rant or just talk to someone. Without this place I would be subjected to being stuck with using some other form of social media and this site has helped me get through a lot of my heartaches and troubles in my life.

Thanks everyone and hope to hear your stories..
