Hi and thanks for looking. I snagged a good treasure I think, here in Fort Walton Beach, Fl. Roughly 7 inches or so long, and roughly 2 1/4 or so inches wide. Bought it from a flea market here, just curious now as to what it may be made of, the age, worth, etc.. I'm fascinated by it!
Thanks again, and happy treasure hunting!!

It could just be far from home. It is large and thinner than I expected. I had thought it may have looked like this one in your original picture.

This piece was bought here in Northwest Florida, Ft Walton Beach. But where it was originally unearthed from is still a mystery. I'm going by our local Indian store today, hopefully they can pinpoint the exact location of this piece! I will post the results later on, I can't wait!! lol Thanks to all for the info! This forum is very helpful!

Tnmountains, I'm thinking my piece may be far from home. Mine does look larger, thicker, and more gray than the one being held in your pic above, but hard to tell. Hoping the Chief at the Indian shop can help later on today! Here's mine once more. 1274500_10200646854833407_1782174854_o[1].jpg

Looks to me to be modern knapping still that takes a ton of skill to make that size.

A goodwill store is not the place that most people would pass off a fake. It looks real good, it's not over sized, it has a good patina stain. Here are a few ways you can test it #1 put a drop of water on it, if it beads up and does not leave a wet spot, then there is some type of wax on it and it is not real.# 2 take rubbing alcohol and wipe it with a cotton ball, if it changes color or there is a heavy amount of stain on the cotton ball it may not be real. #3 get a magnifying glass and look for traces of metal on the blades edges, this does not always work good because a lot of knappers use antler. Anyway if you did not pay a lot for it, it is the start of a collection. Good Luck and HH:thumbsup:

Well, back from the Indian Store. The guy there was very impressed with the piece and said it was definitely 1/2" thick in the thicker parts of the piece. He said it could be old , but also could not be so old. He said that this area had lots of Cherokee Indians, as well as other tribes, coming down from the Georgia area I think he said, and they traded stones and pottery for the whiskey that was located near mobile. He said carbon dating would be the only way to exactly pinpoint the age. He couldn't get over how good the knapping was! He kept saying "You got a good piece there!" . If you're ever in the Ft Walton Beach area, the shop is called One Feather. (below are a few pics of masks for sale at One Feather, I thought they were fascinating! Not "old" per se, but made by Native American Craftsmen..and the headdress has feathers that are over 100 years old!) We also have a native American flute/drum festival coming in early November.

I will be visiting the curator of the Indian Temple Mound museum here in Ft Walton on Tuesday. This lady is the expert and will know for sure. Thanks for the tips also monsterrack! I will try those and see what results I get.
As an artist/musician myself,I have to at least appreciate the time and skill it took to make this unique piece, whether old or new. Once I speak with the curator on Tuesday, I will post the results of my quest! Thanks to all of you for the help and guidance! I've been reading and watching vids nonstop! lol I'm hooked! And for that, I say Thank You!
