Newbie Detector here really needing good advise from you pro's

I finally bought me a Metal Detector and it is a Pioneer Bounty Hunter.I could not afford to fork out a bunch of cash for a high dollar one.And more less wanted a good starter Detector so i bought one that is in great shape from some one local for 45 bucks.I basically am asking for advise on how to go about getting started in this hobby.I have started with my own yard lol.Found nothing.I am studying the manual on my detector as a starting point, and learning how to use it. ???.

well, you already started doing the right thing. read the manual! very important! at first, dig everything so that you can learn what good stuff as well as trash sounds like. go slow, dont be in a hurry. overlap all of your swings by at least a half. if you think about it, the signal coming out of the bottom of your coil is shaped like an upside down cone,so as you swing the signal goes into the ground kinda like this like this( VVVVV ) if you dont overlap your swings you will miss stuff. learn to dig a neat plug. here is a video to show you. uh....what else? oh yeah.... if you want to find gold you have to dig those pulltabs, there is no way around it. gold will ring in just like a tab in most cases. keep reading the forum. you will learn a ton of stuff! good luck!

I very much want to say thank you for your advise and that video.I haven't had a clue how to dig.But now I do.I need to buy one of those shovels and that tool he had.I haven't clue what they are called or where to buy them so if anyone could lead me in that directions I'd appreciate it.

Re: Newbie Detector here really needing good advise from you pro's

i prefer lesche tools. they are super high quality and will last a very long time. a little more expensive but one thing i have learned...if you buy a cheap digger it will wait to break when you are 2 hours back in the woods and have the best signal of the day under your coil! here is a link to the predator tool site ( the people who make lesche diggers) i use the model 85.

http://www.predatortools.com/

several people make pinpointers ( the tool the guy is using in the video to find his target). you dont need to have one to detect, but they make life a lot easier. any detector dealer should carry a line of pinpointers.

Besides a bayonet which I use for a probe, I use a Fiskars trowel. You can find it at most hardware stores and I think it runs about eight bucks and has a lifetime warranty.

If you go to
www.harborfreight.com they have a good deal on a pinpointer by centech....

Do a search for metal detector.
....16.00!!! The majority of others out there will cost 80.00 or more.

I got mine and it works fairly well!

It is also a good idea for you to bring a taser or pepper spray with you!!

Happy hunting

What is the Taser and pepper spray for?

Sometimes we like to hunt in less than stellar places, so some people like to bring some form of protection along just in case.

When you have your headphones on and you are down digging a target you basically forget about everything and everybody else around you and it's easy for somebody to sneak up on you from behind.

My form of protection is being 6'4" and carrying a big knife that I use to dig.

If you are lucky enough to get a good prize - like say a nice ring or something, someone watching you might feel that they need it more than you. Taser, pepper spray ( mostly for dogs running loose) or other things might deter them from that thought.

be really careful though where you dig, if its owned by the government you can be imprisoned/fined/detector taken away if you get caught.

yeah that's a good thought that i forgot about. try to learn what the local laws are pertaining to detecting. if it all possible research the info on your own instead of asking whenever possible. sometimes bureaucrats will just say no even though there is no law on the books if you ask them.
