Hi Kimber, welcome to the forum. You should be alright to detect the beaches up there. As long as you stay between low tide line and the toe of the dunes.Or if the beach is in a state park, like John U.Lloyd down here, you have to check with the ranger, some will let you, some won't.You should look for old forts and ghost towns in your part of the state.Your in a better area than me for decent inland finds.Looking forward to your finds.Keep us updated.Good luck and H.H.-diggummup

Hi Newbie.

I remember reading a couple articles in Western Eastern years ago about metal detecting from a wheelchair. They were very interesting. One was on a group outing and I believe there was one about wheelchair MDing clubs. I will be going to Panama City this Friday for a week to hit the beaches. When I get back i will dig through my back issues and get back to you.

happy hunting

We'd all love to see a picture!

Hi kimber,I seem to remember reading a story once of someone that devised a devise to attach to a weelchair for mounting a detector.I'm sure someone on here could think of something,I'm new here also but from what i've seen there's alot of talent here i'd bet we got more than one engineer on here !(my engineering usually involves duct tape and coathangers :D) good luck ! HH !

hehe your engineering sounds a lot like mine!! On another thread somewhere on this vast website the other day I saw where someone was touting the "tank chair"...very cool contraption that's basically a wheel chair on 'army tank' tracks. It looks like it would definitely be beneficial at least in the way of getting around (especially some of the sandy areas here!) and it sits high up off the ground, which would also help my Dad with getting up and down.

Thanks Joe, I'll look forward to hearing back if you find the back issues. I'm tickled to say that Dad is determined to NOT wind up in a wheel chair though (God bless him), but if God's will is different than his own, it would still be good to have a back up plan! I don't know if he'd join any club, but if he could see other people doing it, I'm sure it would help him to realize that just because he had to be in a wheel chair (if it turned out that way) then at least he wouldn't be the only one AND it would prove that it didn't mean the end of his MDing hobby.

Thanks, I'm going to be hitting some of the beaches (both Destin and the ones between Navarre and Gulf Breeze) shortly after Christmas (when I can actually get my hands on my ACE 250 - don't worry I won't go near the wet sand with it). There is a TN member that lives in my town that I have been corresponding with and we hope to be able to get together for a hunt after the holidays! The only forts I know of are strictly off limits for MDing (Fort Pickens) or are in state owned areas. As for Ghost Towns, I know of one, but one of the town's doctors just built a really big house over the top of the site of the old post office (town was Austinville) and I can't see him letting me dig around on his manicured lawn ;D...but that's ok, I know there are other places around, this place is steeped in history whether it be CW history or Native American history. I actually was able to hit a beach along the bay on Sunday with a lady who was generous enough to offer up the location - and just eyeshooting, we found SEVERAL NICE pieces of old pottery (with several different designs). Talk about a surreal experience. We were just walking along, talking and picking up pieces left and right. It amazes me the number of people who go there (you could tell the 'beach' was well walked) and pass right by that stuff - either they don't realize what it is or just don't care.

Tourezrick, it would most likely end up being a demonstration for a "mini RODEO"...but I do have at least one that would probably tolerate packs as long as he got to stand and graze for the most part!

HI Kim,My main detectin buddy is handicapped and uses a cane. Its one of the ones with the forearm brace and he has added one of his kid's shoes to the tip to keep it from sticking into the mud. :D Works fine, now he's trying to devise something to keep his coil out away from the cane.I tryed to help but coathangers kind of defeated the purpose ! :D

Just saw your post, hope to see you all out detecting sometime. I moved into the Milton Florida, been almost 3 years now. I just got back into metal detecting this past summer. It seem that the public beaches are open to hunting, still not sure about on the Alabama side. A lady in Pensacola has her own shop, she is in the book and has been metal detecting the area for over 20 years. She is a member of a club that meets at Chets seafood once a month. I have talk to another guy who has a shop in fort walton beach that has a lot of info on that area.
I mostly hunted casino beach last summer, it seems most of the beaches in the area have had to build the beaches back up by hauling/pumping in new sand. Hurricane Ivan and Dennis really was hard on them.
So most of the hunting is for newly lost items. I plan to start hunting again in the next week or two.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Thanks for the welcome Nash! I'm looking forward to sharing some finds soon!

Country Girl, thanks and you're right, I wish Christmas would come on, I'm itching to get my hands on MY detector as much as I'm ready for hubby (and son Dakota) to get theirs!

We are up to 21 miniature horses right now. We also have two big horses (for riding which we seldom have time to do) - one is a Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse cross and the other is a gaited/quarter horse cross. We are expecting just two miniature foals this next spring (I was lazy earlier this year during breeding season - just couldn't get motivated to pair the girls up [I have no doubts the boys were up to it though ;D]). ::) so I probably should sell a couple to make some room - it's just so hard to let them go!!

Just wondering if miniature horeshoes bring a little luck? ;D
~Nash~
