Re: Newbie's First Detector

The Sovereign GT is one of the best detectors made, bar none. Many use it for the beach and woods and with at waterproof box you can get it wet. Mine is not waterproofed yet but I have the Excal for that anyway. I like the fact that I can install a WOT 15" coil or a Joey coil depending on conditions or types of hunting that I want to do. Plug in a premium set of headphones like Black Widows and you are cutting out most of the outside surf noises and start hearing them tiny sounds that you would miss with the Wal-Mart jobbies.

You can hunt in All Metal or Discriminate. Hear Threshold or run silent. Change frequencies if other detectors are near. Even use a pinpoint mode, though it isn't necessary as you can just pull the coil away from the target and slowly advance the coil till you first hear the response and the target is just under the tip of the coil. The DD coil of the GT covers more ground at depth than the concentric coils of the other detectors, hence finding more deeper stuff. Tones help id the targets too so you can skip the coins and just dig gold rings and pull tabs which sound the same to most guys.

Thanks Nick for the kind words.

Re: Newbie's First Detector

Sov GT rocks on the beach, dry, wet and shallow water. (Don't get the control box wet). Add the WOT to the Gov GT and you have a killer beach machine. (in the surf as well if you water-proof it)

I have 2 sov GT's (1 is water-proofed) and they are all I currently use at the beach. I have an Excal for surf backup, but it gets used less then a Beta video recorder.......

Don't think you could go wrong with the GT. GL
