nice 39. I found one just as clean and new last week. I do 2-4 boxes of nickels a week. Average 1 war per box and about 30 or so pre 60's.

I find so many pre 60's are they worth keeping for chunking back into my bucket. Nickels are just so time consuming,to not find any wars or buffs. Also I have tons of 68s 69s and 70s. Are they that common to find 6 or more each in my boxes?

I find a ton of pre 60's but I keep them just because. I especially keep the key date ones. The rest I just add to my 5 gallon water bottle. Once full Ill stop keeping unless once again key dates. The 68s-70s are pretty common. I have a roll of each and have tossed back the rest.

The '39D is a nice find....I haven't found too many of those myself..... and the '42D is a better date too.

Which ones are the key dates? I like searching nickels and keep all pre 64 just because but I don't know which ones are the key dates.

Key dates are as follows:

1939D

SILVER WAR NICKS ARE 42-45 AS FOLLOWS
1942P/S
1943P/S/D
1944 P/D/S
1945 P/D/S

1950D

There are also errors to look for. Best thing is to invest in a REDBOOK. best invest you can get for collecting coins.

You could also check a used book store. Any red book from the last 5 years or so would have enough information

You will also want to get a decent magnifier to check for errors and varieties. Nickels are loaded with varieties such as the 1939 doubled die reverse and 1954 S/D. Some are well worth looking for, and they can be found. I've scored a few in my searching. BTW, nice score on your 1939 D, I didn't find one until I was about 50 boxes into my searching. The Buffalo nics will come too as will V nics if you stay on it.

Sure thing. I found a few pre 60's that seem to be miss stamped. The words start to run off the coin on one end and there's a mm or so in thickness at the other end. Like that blanks didnt seat right when they were stamped.

Post a pic, they may be off-center.
