Since this isn't a "Today's Finds", or a "What Is It". I found this about 23 years ago at an old home site, at the time I found this nobody had lived at that location since we moved to the area in 1971, so presumably this ring had been lost pre 1971 and according to old maps I have this home was there in the 1870's. My question is does gold normally deteriorate this badly, or would this just be 18K plated??

I'd say most likely plate unless it's really low grade like 7K

I don't think gold would deteriorate like that. There was a style, way back, of gold like that with enameling in the voids. ie enameling is glass melted in place. I use to make jewelry like that. If the glass was not the right temperature glass, it would pop out later on. With gold you normally use 1800 degree glass. What's left is to thick for a cheap plating. Frank
