What a hunt today!
John and I met at 0830 and tried a part of this Baltimore City park that we'd not detected but soon chose to move on.....lots of trash and only clad.
We headed west about 7 blocks and settled in to a more productive spot, at least we were digging wheats, albeit mostly 40's and 50's.
John was digging faint high tones so he did get a couple relics: a brass cap and a pewter square with embossed flower pattern.
We did a short wrap-up and then John had to leave. I stayed and moved further west, closer to the main road which is one of the old major roadways into Baltimore.
I began to dig relics!
Here they are in the order dug.
Tiny brass buckle that looks mid to early 19th century,
.
Next was a drawer pull that shows a small amount of silver plating,
.
Then a man's copper ring that has been crushed,
.
The hole with the ring also yielded this piece of blue and white pottery,
.
Then came the most interesting dig of the morning; the targets in this hole came out in three parts:
First was a shallow quarter, and then, 4 - 5 inches deeper came what appeared to be a flat button.
. This is the side opposite the shank.
Letters of words are backwards but read "EXTRA QUALITY".
Yet there was a third target in this hole, and I recognized it immediately as the front section of a domed military button. Removing some of the soil revealed the word
"EXCELSIOR" and I figured it had to be a New York Militia button but didn't understand then that it is an officer's uniform button.

Really excited to have dug a Civil War era button today. New York Militia are known to have been stationed at various locations in Baltimore. Not sure if this is one of those sites.
Anyway, it bears gridding now that all of these have been found.
