Jolly Mon , Corruption is everywhere and the US is ranked 19th in world , so you need to climb of your high horse and get with the real world :sunny:
And I am disgusted with the king going on a Elephant hunt , He got a media bashing back in Spain over it. Maybe he should have taken on the elephant without a gun .

It has already happened in the case of Sea Hunt with the Juno and Galga :sad9:

The Sea Hunt Case

Counsel for Sea Hunt made grave errors in that case. Probably the gravest was in agreeing, on April 1st, 1999, to stipulating that both Juno and La Galaga, by name, lay within the 3 mile limit off Assateague Island. This basically took the burden of proof off Spain and waived the need for an evidentiary hearing. No counsel will ever make the same mistake again in an admirality law case again, I am sure. The moral to that story is an old one: don't make deals with the devil.

It is interesting that despite Spanish counsels repeated invocation of Sea Hunt as precedent, the court in the Odyssey case refused to bite, basing its decision on FSIA and the principle of comity.

The United States is ranked 19th BEST in the world. This is not something to be proud of, perhaps, but at least it does not place us squarely in league with the Banana Republics of the world. :angel3:

But who should be surprised that corruption should be so rampant, indeed seemingly endemic, to Spain and Latin America?

As the "Mother" of all Banana Republics, the sins of the fathers keep visiting the children, even unto the 21st century. 8-)

Just more nonsense from the hedge fund managers at Meson...you gotta love the way they keep pounding to try to make that buck. At what point are you going to jump on the bandwagon and buy Omex ?? Note the "short seller" disclosure fine print...

US is ranked 19th in the world for corruption , clear winners
Check out your national debt U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time , 17 Trillion and counting !! At Lease Spain can pay back it's debt.[/QUOTE]

But Spain can't pay back it debt. The Spanish economy is in among the worst shape of any in the industrialized world. It is right there with other bottom feeders like Greece. Unemployment in Spain just "fell" to 26%. That is not a typo. Over 1 in 4 Spaniards has no job and no prospects. Spain is a failed socialist state, like so many others in the EU.

The US has problems for sure, but actually, our long term economic prospects are very bright. We will be the largest producer of oil again in just a few years. Our economy is the largest, deepest and most advanced of any country on earth by a wide margin. Our GDP is over twice that of China and equal to the entire EU.

While we are on this subject, I will point out that while Spain may not sell the coins from the Mercedes, I believe that they can and probably will borrow money against the Treasure. Being that many Corporations in Spain have went bankrupt and some of their biggest Banks are on the verge of bankruptcy, the Country has lost and continues to lose millions and millions of tax dollars. It would behove them to borrow money against the Treasure and they probably care less if they lose it due to non-payment. Heck, borrowing and spending money that they don't have is pretty much their history and they keep doing this over and over and over!

OSSY,

Why did you bring up corruption and what does it have to do with it! I was stating that Spain can and probably will borrow money against the Treasure and will care less if they lose it due to non-payment. Every Country's Government has corruption in one form or another but it only takes someone in Spain's Government to propose what I theorized and the people in power to vote on it and pass it for it to become reality! Spain used millions upon millions upon millions in Gold, Silver and Gems stolen from the indigenous natives of Central and South America as well as the Southwest United States to bail them out of bankruptcy many times over some 300 years, so why stop now??!!

So if I understand this right. The U.S. courts said they had no jurisdiction in the case. Odyssey's ship or personal were detained in the area and that is the reason they gave it back? Had this gold and silver ever been in Spain?

Kudos to Spain and its relentless pursuit of justice and underwater cultural heritage protection.

Remember, this was never about the gold and silver. Maybe next time there is some people that thinks that they can make a fast buck on our ships and cargo, maybe they will have Odyssey's example of such a Big Fail will work as a sobbering thought.

I take offense to your ridiculous attitude, i dont care what the court ruled, Spain abandoned that gold and never bothered looking for it.

These people spent their time and money looking for it only to get screwed .

This is basically stealing..
The Spanish are the most successful pirates ever. They stole the same treasure twice centuries apart. Once from the people they enslaved and murdered 300 years ago when they first acquired it and again after Odyssey spent all the money and did all the work to locate and recover it. And they say crime dosn't pay....
