I am sympathetic to your plight, O.D. and thought I'd try to help.

First of all, when one is searching for a particular coin, that type of coin should be among
the most found that day. That tells you you're in the ballpark.

Like this:

2014 (1045).jpg

With your ear properly tuned, you can expect to see this at
the bottom of the hole:

2014 (1039).jpg
2014 (1040).jpg

Now, pay attention! In case you don't get it, (there will be a test),
I'll show it to you again.

Tune in your ear and then, they start to appear:

2014 (1041).jpg
2014 (1042).jpg

Now, see? Think you got it?

Well, just in case, here's a slight wrinkle:

Sometimes, if you're really concentrating, you might see this:

2014 (1043).jpg

This is what they look like when they fall out of the plug. :)

Just practice and you will be doing it in no time! ;)

Oh, there's a side benefit to looking for them too:

2014 (1038).jpg
2014 (1044).jpg

If you catch my drift. :)

2014 (1046).jpg

Also got some whole wheat toasts.

2014 (1047).jpg
2014 (1048).jpg

Pearl was an eyeball find of course. I suspect it's from an earring.
There is only one hole in it.

2014 (1049).jpg 2014 (1050).jpg

Remember what I said about concentrating? Must've been listening close today, huh. ;)
(This thing appears to be silver and seems like there was some time spent in it's crafting.)

2014 (1051).jpg
Bling one.
2014 (1052).jpg
Bling two.

2014 (1053).jpg

Blingie, Fishy AND I are rather satisfied with the ending to our season.

Yes, I'm done. (for the year)

I only intended to hunt for an hour this morning, before the scheduled rain hit.
It never hit! LOL I wound up hunting a LOT longer than I intended and I'm going to
rest all the way til next year!! :)

Thanks to everyone for all the support and enjoyment from all the postings!

Happy New Year a bit early!

Well I'm with OD on this. I have yet to find a war nickel. But honestly I don't often dig nickel targets as they usually end up being pull tabs. Finding 3 war nickels in one day is just amazing, and you do have your ear well tuned.

That's just plain mean, none of us guys would ever rub your Olddude nose in it like that Dave, lol haaaaaaaa, That's almost as bad as putting up three pix of Spanish silver every time someone mentions Spanish silver.

All kidding aside, nice day of cool finds Gary, good job, don't quit now, still a few days more, go find some more!

Sarcasm is another one of my good traits, besides you made it so easy for us. Notice and learn how Dave is keeping his mouth shut on this one.

Oh now, heckfire! Don't any of ya fret about Dave. He's just waiting for the proper time and there SHALL be a come uppance, to be sure!
If we can't have a bit of leg pullage now & then, would be pretty dull wouldn't it.

Oh and Treb? I know there's a couple days left and I do have a traditional hunt planned but that's it for me. I just plain wore me too far out of sorts! I hunted 3 days in a row and the last one a LOT longer than I planned. Much as I'd like to be as young as Old Dude, it's just not so. :dontknow:

Gotta love those nickels! I have found only one war nickel. But I am proud to say I found a nickel spill that took two days to clean out. I lost count after 168.

Hopefully on New Year's Eve, I can do the yard of a permission ( work schedule permitting). He told me the house was built in 1800's and it is the 3rd barn on it's foundation. Maybe I can end the year with silver instead of copper.
