Found this today while using my excal on the beach in Ocean View Va. Looks like some sort of end cap for a pipe but it seems to have a heat dissipation around it. Anyone have any ideas? Looks a bit beat up from the ocean but I can't tell if it was made by machinery or hand cast/forged. Thanks for looking and hopefully we can get it solved! Update: Called it copper but it could b brass. Not really sure.

Update: Here are a few better pictures of of this thing. The reason I think it may have been cast is that it is really rough and uneven on the inside which I think you can see. There is also still some other metal (lead I believe) that remains near the lip and may have been used to secure it to whatever it went on. If so...how long ago did they use lead to secure copper together?

Thanks for looking nsdu.....yeah, don't think it is from a dune buggy. Guessing something from a house that may have been on the beach at one time or from a ship, just don't know how old. It doesn't look factory or machine made, but it is pretty dinged up so that makes it hard to tell....

Maybe fly, does have a small hole in the center but there are no threads on the inside and it is really rough and unfinished looking in there.

If you found it about 1/4 mile southeast of the old amusement park, it might be from a plane crash site. A Navy plane went down in the surf there in the early 70's and you can still find tons of plane parts in the water and surrounding area.

Good info cudamark! Yeah, it is down the beach from there so I guess that adds another possibility!

Maybe an old steam part?

That is one of the things I was considering as well. The "heat sink" around it leads me to believe it went on a pipe or machine that carried hot water or steam. Still stumped on this one though.....anyone else have any more thoughts or ideas on this one?

My monitor is not large enough to read all the posts but could it be old costume jewelry?

No, not jewelry, too big and heavy. Thinking it may be brass but not sure how to test for that or copper. Had some green on it, not as much as some of the copper sheeting I have been finding on the beach.

Yes its copper but I dont know of any plumbing caps that use a heat sink.
I thought it might be a big ugly flower brooch or something and the large gemstone fell out.
I see what you mean it looks like copper radiator fins.
I guess like surf, something from a burner.

Why is your thread so large and why is surfs pic so large? Its all way to large to view on my screen.
Its aggravating just to try and post. Am I the only one?
