Got back to the spot where I found the Mercs and bottle dump a few weeks back. It is amazing how quickly the greenery fills in this time of year. I didn't even recognize the spot. I managed to find a pre 1950's old coca cola bottle ( I left it in the car, pic will be uploaded tomorrow), the YALE padlock (1920's???) and the mans silver (I think?) ring. the ring rang a little low on the VDI for a ring it's size and weight, and appears to be silver plated??? I never heard such a thing before but there are no markings on it. There appears to be a little corrosion where I can see another metal. It was about 4.5 inches deep.

Any info on the lock would be appreciated.

This lock is a Yale 1 1/2" Lever Brass.

Manufacturer Yale
Materials Used Brass (cast bronze)
Size 1 1/2" x 2' X 11/16"
dates Design Patent 1878 (see notes)
Type of Keyway Yale 87
Operating Mechanism 3 lever, wards, spring latch
Approx value $5.00

Although design patent #10,843 for this type of lockwas issued Septb24, 1878 to Henry R Towne & Warren H Taylor and assigned to the Yale Lock Co., we can find a similar lock under patent # 192,847 dated July 10, 1877 issued to Warren H Taylor, also assigned to Yale. (Note that there is a differance between a patent number and a design patent number) This general design, (i.e., hinged shackle and slight curvature at the top of the case, can be found from other manufacturers such as Corbin, Sargent, Lockey, & Eagle.

Hope this helps

Remember that silver is made with more then just silver. Maybe its a older silver ring and thats why it rang up low on your VDI.

Yes. Nice lock. You could probably get that one working.

Karinus, The padlock appears to be in full working condition, up to the lock mechanism. I have been careful not to lock it as I have not yet found the key :).

Thanks for the info lockman, however I think my lock is much more modern than the models shown on the patent images. The patent may be the same, but based on the style I would have to date mine sometime after 1920.

Thanks for the info!

I believe that locks with the Yale & Towne "Y & T" trefoil logo (sometimes described as a "key head" or "clover) on the back of the case date from 1897 to 1925.
