I received a call earlier this week from a good friend from Tnet ‘pepperj’, inviting me join him in detecting the site of a mid-19thc railroad station and an old homestead. He had located these by researching old local maps of the area and was nice enough to invite me along! We started at the old home site, which has been long gone. Pepperj had detected this site last year and had found an 1858 US Flying Eagle Penny, but after spending and hour here, we had little to show for our efforts, so we moved onto the site of the railroad station. As we made our way through the cornfield, it only took us about 15mins to locate where the station must have been, because the ground was heavily littered with broken glass, pottery shards, bits of tins and the occasional broken brick. :icon_scratch:

Pepperj was first on the board when he found a beautiful brass men’s wedding band, he later found a beautiful 1917 LC right on top of the soil! :o My finds came a little slower, but my best find had to be a brass Arts & Crafts Period ‘whatsit’! I also found the ‘face’ portion of a doorknob and a couple of other early brass ‘whatsits’. Of course, my favourite find of the hunt was the horseshoe! :laughing7:

Thanks for looking,
Dave

It was great to hooking up for a hunt and even though neither of us managed to hit a home run in the finds department you did manage a few neat looking relics. The site really needs to be deep plough to get some older action, that or both sites need a half ton of less iron and a hundred less acres of corn stalks!! A snipper coil might work well in these two sites as well, or a return visit with a Deus machine. I did get a half permission to do a small area of the 1803 church on the backside of the fields from another land owner (he just finished his electric fencing that included all the gate systems), but it only produced a chunk of lead for a hour of swinging. The farmer started to groom the first site as I was leaving the area so planting will happen sooner than later. We have to make it a point to get together before everything is off limits from the planting, or the grass is too high. I'll post up my finds when I get the small cent and LC out of the HP bath.

Looks like a Ginormous horse shoe. Lots of luck there! And not a bad day. You both found some interesting things. I have had worse days.

Definitely Jim, lets plan to revisit this site again possibly the week of May 18th.
I'm getting the MRI of my knee done on the Wednesday, but maybe we could meet on the Thursday or Friday.
I'll give you a call this week to discuss it... thanks again for this opportunity! :occasion14:
Dave

PS. Were you able to get a date off the small penny you found?

That's exactly what I said when I pulled it from the ground... this was one big horse! :laughing7:
Hopefully after the farmer has plowed under the corn stocks more will come to light!

Best of luck to you OJG,
Dave

I will know what it is later today as the soaking is finally showing what the date is. The fertilizers really did a number on the coppers at this location, it still needs a deep plough to turn up some more railroad tie plates, anchors, and the spikes.:laughing7:

Sounds good about meeting up and trying to get a keeper out of the site, the stalks should be knocked down by then. :)
Good luck with the knee.

Nice relics! Congrats!

Your fancy what's it looks like it may have a matching opposite partner like two fire place iron tops, but I am guessing.
You'll have a ton of luck now with the big horse shoe! Baby Clydesdale maybe?

The triangle looks like an iron base (for ironing clothes) minus the handle.

Relics and what's its are awesome they tell you the story.

As always, I'm very grateful for your posts and support MsBB!
I have absolutely no idea what the decorative brass piece might be... I just wish it wasn't so bent up.

The triangle is exactly that, an old iron that would've been heated up on top of a wood stove for ironing clothes.
I know a lot of folks complain about finding horseshoes, but I love finding them, whether halves or complete! :laughing7:

Best of luck to you at the school sites,
Dave
