The front of the coin does look very similar to a 1964 100 yen silver coin (minus the two characters on the bottom and a dotted border around the rim), however the value and back design do not match up. The 1964 1000 yen silver coin is completely different. Also, this coin is magnetic so it is definitely not silver. It seems like it should be from 1964 but so far I've been unable to find an exact match.

justgeese - It looks like you were correct.

Thank you for your inquiry of January 25th.
Regarding the photos, sorry we cannot identify that.
We are informing you that this is a medal, not a coin.
We didn't manufacture that.

Sincerely,

Now I don't feel as bad about all the time I've wasted trying to identify it. Although I was hoping that it would at least be worth its apparent exchange rate. Thank you Mackaydon and justgeese for helping me out.

You're very welcome....find a cheap chain for it and list it on ebay under Olympic Souviner's and maybe make something for all the time you invested ;D
Don

I might give that a try if I ever get around to selling stuff on eBay.

When only the obverse image showed up on an actual coin of another denomination and the reverse didn 't show up anywhere, I'm sure we all knew something was amiss. Add the thought that (I believe) Olympic coins of this type were only issued in silver and yours was not, only added to the doubt.

It's still a great conversational piece, and was a pleasure to research.
Don.....
