I squeezed a short hunt in this morning in the hay field. I could not seem to pick up anything even worth posting >:(
About half way home I hit a nice repeating signal and out came this buckle. I am not really sure what kind of buckle it is. Age? I put the Half Dollar in for size comparison. I am hoping for it to be some kind of colonial era shoe buckle.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for more copper.

VermontPackrat, it looks to me as though you have found a colonial buckle. This one would be called a "sub-rectangular Knee buckle", and it's a nice one with that design. It should measure somewhere around 47mm in length?

Vermont, I don't know if there is or not. I checked a hard copy article by Ross Whitehead to be sure about your's.

47 mm Exactly !! The buckle is well made and kind of heavy for its size.

Great! According to Whitehead, your buckles dates sometime between 1720 and 1790. :icon_thumright:

Thank You for the info !! I guess that I will have to stock up on a few books this winter.
Any suggestions on some books concerning colonial type relics, buttons etc.?
