This piece was found today in an area of a reef flat where parts of a shipwreck were reportedly found in 1884. There is a metal pin & a rounded recess close to the pin.
Whilst we find it impossible to tell what it could be, we're hoping someone has seen similar pieces & could possibly shine some light onto it ! The wood has turned totally black & is honeycombed by borers.

Whatever it is, if it's wood and you like it you better get it into a freshwater bath or it will crumble.

In this pic the rounded recess can discerned somewhat better. From this angle it looks as though it could be some kind of locking latch.

This a concretion. Until preserved, it can be anything, from trash to part of a shipwreck. And, even if treated, it can be inconclusive, with no origin, no dating.
