Found this at the same site as my buckle yesterday and didn't think much of it till I cleaned it. Everything in me wants to call it some type of signal cannon but not sure. It is 8 and 3/8's inches long. It is round and flared on one end and octagon and inside is threaded on the other end. Look at the pic where the octagon end is on the left and you will see a tiny hole in the side which goes all the way thru to the inside. On octagon end it looks like it's stamped with unopened tulips. It has the number 44 stamped on octagon end in one pic. The inside diameter is 5/8's of an inch. Any ideas what this is. My grandson just noticed on top of barrel what might be a makers mark. The letters E L G. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1482345167.397934.jpg

the base was hollow with out side threading ..you loaded the base ..then you screwed the barrel on .. typically it had a hole in the side for either a frizzen flash pan or later on a percussion type cap nipple ..they were strictly one shot weapons due to their extremely slow reloading process --(you had to unscrew the barrel to reload it ) --as such they were a last ditch type of weapon --the 44 is likely the caliber of bullet it shot --the tulips are typical of dutch made items --likely its a "proof mark"

That is awesome. Thanks guys. I love this site because there is such a combined wealth of knowledge herethat rarely does anyone post pics that go on unidentified by the veterans here. I am forever grateful. HH

The barrel on this looks identical to the one I dug. Not sure on time period of when it was made. Being flintlock could it be 18th century or 17th century. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1482363051.295309.jpg

ELG was the same gunsmith that made the gun I found, I figured I just didn't know of a breech loading gun. That is a great find, congrats. Just like when I found mine, it really makes you thinks as to how someone can misplace a gun. I still want to know the story as to how it ended up me finding it? I'm sure those scenarios are on your mind too.

Yes they are and since identifying it I have gone back and covered every inch of ground in the same area it was found hoping I could recover more of the same gun but nothing there. Searched and then cross searched. Oh well I'm still very pleased with the barrel. It cleaned up very nicely. Thanks for the help and all the replies.
