Hard to well from photos but looks to have some micro critter fossils which would say chert over obsidian. The lighter edge suggest such also.

not too sure about coral found this in the middle of the woods close to a trout stream guess the mystery deepens

what state, area?
You can find sea fossils on high mountains, in the woods, etc. Much of the land has been covered by water at some point in time. Your local gem/mineral society would know what is appropriate for your area, as would a rock shop if you have any nearby.

I'd have to say left over slag from a poetry mill or porcelain factory from around 1890's.

Slag is a possibility to, wizard is correct.

Yup, I agree to that it's probably slag.

I would say 99.9% slag. I find a ton of that stuff here in MI. The lake stuff gets worn down a bit (Lake Michigan is loaded with the stuff), but I've dug some up too and they look more like yours. Pardon me, Rattle, I took a look at the images and your site.. wonderful work.. My wife is looking for a very large amethyst sphere and I'd like to have a wand and a sphere made from two different rocks I've found.. One is a cream colors chalcedony while the other is a long orange rock that I have no clue what it is, but is a perfect size and length for a wand (5 sided preferred with double terminations).. Pm me details or should I send you a contact via your page?
