Probably everybody that has posted on here over the years has made a find that they thought might have made the banner, but for one reason or another they slipped by. This is not a thread for complaining it just happens, perhaps the find never received enough votes, or perhaps the story line was not good enough, could be a number of reasons.

I haven't posted a thread for a while, so a chance to look back at some of my finds, and others from over the years. I have had my share of banners so I can't complain really, but I must admit I thought some were a no brainer, and some unlikely to make it up top.

I'll start with one that I thought was a no brainer, but didn't go up top despite probably being one of the rarest of my finds. A key dating back to the 9th century and most likely from the Viking/Saxon period.

Insane finds! How did you clean them? They look spectacular

I used the hot water, tin foil and baking soda method. They came from the highest tide mark at the foot of the dune so they stayed out of the salt water most of there time in the sand. They are from a survivor camp location were the survivors of the 1733 fleet came ashore. They were in great condition. Just started working this spot again this year. Found six nice galleon spikes my first day back. The stern castle from one ship came ashore here. Patience pays at this spot, there should be more.

I'll just post this one.
A spill or cache containing 3 French (1450-1720) and one Spanish (1744) silver. Found in the woods near Montreal last September.

That is definitely a Banner quality find, but I believe it was your first post, and they have a rule about that. I made the same mistake. My first post was a 1797 Draped Bust dime :laughing7:

Yes, my first find on Treasurenet. Not a big deal that I didn't get the banner tho. But definitively could have qualified for a banner find otherwise...i think. But on my mane forum I lost in the find of the year contest against the US gold dollar 1850's. So not everyone appreciates very early silver I guess.

I think my banner find barely made it and I have only seen a few other banner finds that I would trade it for especially as far as relics found in the US and Canada. The colonial gold ring cache comes to mind. In my mind I would have to find a very valuable ring or coin to top it but most would probably think otherwise. We all seek out different "treasure"

That should never have happened unless the gold dollar was an exceptionally rare date/mint mark.

I thought my 1837 Capped Bust Half in mint condition would have, same with my Vlack 19-87C Machin Mills Half Penny, my 1787 Crosby 1-A Nova Eborac, and my Revolutionary War Sword Scabbard Throat...guess I've just always missed the crowds?

I personally would have voted for a 1450's French silver coin found in North America against a US dollar unless it's one of only 1000 known.

...first thing ever posted on TN (by my wife in search of info). How this lead seal has survived in such good condition still amazes me.

A couple years ago a company was dredging for beach replenishment about 300 yards off Strathmere, NJ. They had no idea they dredged over a sunken Spanish ship and pumped silver/gold coins all over the beach. Some little kid found one and the word got out pretty quickly. I was 17-20 at the time (now 28) I immediately bout a Tracker IV off eBay and eventually found one. Of course the company dredging found out and put a screen on their outlet pipe out of greed. But they'll never get mine! That's where it all started for me.

Cool thread to bring back some awesome finds. I have one that I thought might have a chance at being a Banner since it was found on the west coast. I know it still makes me smile months after finding it. 1811 French 5 franc(size of a US silver Dollar).. Napoleon was in power and that is him on the coin. I suspect it was lost during the gold rush since the coin has that amount of wear. For me to think of the story that coin could tell would be amazing. Keep posting folks!:icon_thumleft:

Within my first month of being on the forum I dug an 1785 Vermont landscape copper:

DSC07620.JPG DSC07621.JPG DSC07622.JPG DSC07623.JPG

For a dug copper from that time period, it's in stellar condition. Those photos are of the coin right after I dug it and I haven't messed with it since for fear of damaging it. Still debating if I want it professionally cleaned or if I like the green/dirt look.

I was told it was a Ryder 3 variety which would mean there are only 50-60 known, but I was still pretty new when I posted it and the photos aren't great so it didn't go up top. Oh, well; just keep digging! :laughing7:
