I recently found a really nice steel relic and wanted to clean and preserve it in a professional manner. I slow cooked it in my electrolysis machine, followed by judicious use of nylon and brass brushes. I then coated all of the iron with a product called "k-phos" It is available from KG Coatings Inc. This stuff is incredible! I don't sell it, but after seeing what it can do for the past few years, I will defenitely reccomend it! We have a cast Iron shoescraper in our yard that I dug several years ago. I sandblasted and coated it with K-phos. 12 years now in the weather with NO rust AT ALL!!

i use muriatic acid cleans it to the metal and pulls lots of detail out
the acid does all the work
then a box of baking soda in a gallon of water (to render the acid on the item inert)
then a heavy rinse then i soak it in motor oil
not for small delicate items :-[

Another very good technique! I still recommend the K-phos though as a final step. It will prevent any furthur rust from occuring.....EVER and leaves a nice oil free finish that is essentially invisible
