I sold 8500 common wheats about 20 years ago to a dealer and got a penny and a half each for them. I kept everything pre-40, all the S mints and any uncirculated coins. At the time, I was happy to get what I got for them. If you want to improve your collection, your best bet, in my view, is to buy from a coin dealer. You'll get coins in better condition that way; most wheaties come out of the ground a little beat up (in my experience).

A common Wheat penny is about 2 1/2 times its face value in copper today.
