Most guys keep anything older that 1960...why? Because nothing worth saving after that.

I was wondering the same thing, but my local coin shop told me that he would pay $0.15 for a pre 1960 nickel. I don't know why but, $0.10 is $0.10 haha

I don't know why, but I do. Never asked LCS if he buys them. Guess I will because that would be great to get .15 for each. I have about 500 of them. There are other ones to keep, low mintage's, errors, full steps and so on. I want to cut back on what I keep, I'm trying to become just a silver guy, not a coin collector guy. It's up to you, what do you want to keep?

Getting $.15 for only a $.05 coin is 200% profit. Where else can you get that type of return value? Not the stock market. Think of it as a percentage gain and not , gee-wiz i only made fifteen cents selling that nickel.

I don't see how your lcs could stay in business buying pre 60 nickels for .15, there are so many of them out there. I know if I lived in the vicinity he would be buried in them. If I were you and this offer is legit, I'd be searching as many boxes as possible.

It's a small shop that deals in antiques, stamps, coins, and comics. It seems to me that they deal mainly with filling holes in peoples collections. I was able to buy 2 1oz. rounds for 20 bucks each there when silver was at 18.87 the other day. Less of a coin shop and more like a guy who collects things decided to open a store. It's the only coin shop around me.

I called my local coin dealer and he does not buy any pre 1960 nickles except the War Nickles, Bufalo Nickles, and the V Nickles. He does not care about 1959, 1958, 1957 etc. I am going to dump these ones.

buy a REDBOOK, then make a list until you memorize the winners, always check each coin for errors, and if it jumps out at you with full luster----loupe it. just a few: 38&39 P&D, 39 doubled, any pre70 with full steps, 82 P&D in AU/MS, 83P with die clash or CUD, and/or full steps, 92P full steps, greasers and off-center strikes, 50D, 54D, D over S, 55S S over D. there are others, including the 05P&D bisons with die cracks. my process is any Jeff that has the fat look of a buff, high relief of the portrait and building in relation to the field gets louped

Well talked to the owner of the shop today, he informed me that no they will not just buy any pre-1960 nickel. To get $0.15 it has to be pre 1950 and it has to be in Very Fair condition or better. For him to purchase a pre 1960, it has to be in pretty much Uncirculated Condition. I was a little disappointed, but it makes more sense. The only one he bought was the 1938 nickel I brought in. :(

I save all my Pre 60's just because of thier age...In the next 10-15 years..they will be alot harder to find...Pretty much what happen with Indian Heads...I used to get them for .10 a piece at the flea market..Now they go for about a buck a piece..and alot of people expect this will happen to the Wheat cents as well...I might be wasting my time saving them..But I do

Ok, I am confused. Oviously Bufalos, V Nickles, And nickles with a letter P, S, and D over the building on the reverse are keepers but why some crh keep others like 1959, 1958, etc. do they sell for a premium too. In one word which ones must be keepers??? Thanks. DW.

I used to save them but no more. They just take up space and tie up funds.

Very Fair? Did you mean very fine?

Either way, your first post seemed too good to be true.
1940-58 wheat pennies are worth 3 times face value but Jefferson nickels of that era aren't.
Ultimately there is less demand for Jefferson nickels.
The only way I see that changing, is if the composition of nickels change, and the government start culling the CuNi.

I had some luck sells rolls of 1940s and 1950s nickels on Ebay, but it wasn't consistent.

Currently as far as Jefferson's go I keep the following:
War Nickels
Key/semi key dates (1950D, 1938 DS, 1939DS)
Error coins
1942D, 1948S, 1949S, 1950, 1951S, 1955 (not considered semi key, but low mintage, < 14 million)
1938 and 1939 (not worth much but they're 75-6 years old)
all 1940-9 that are at least VF
all 1950-9 that are at least AU
Proof coins (not worth much, because they are all banged up, but I don't find many)
Canadian: all 1981 and older (older ones have numismatic value, newer ones are nickel bullion)

Yeah He wrote it down for me as VF and I thought that meant Very Fair. My bad :(

I have a question about 1968S, 1969S, and 1970S Nickels. Are they worth keeping? I seem to get 3 or 4 in each box. I know they aren't really low mintage.

They are business strike coins, not proofs. No added value.

Girlfriends father has several Jars of Buffalo Nickles (old gallon milk jars) any have a decent idea what they may be worth. I don't know if he went through them looking for key dates or not. Think most of them have been sitting in the Jars since his father put them their in the 50's.

Neither the proofs nor the business strikes 1968S-1970S are worth more than face, unless MS65/PF65
