homie ALWAYS SAVINGS, bank people get commissions when you open a checking account. PNC, and several other high-end banks, realize this and up the minimum deposit to a staggering $250. ima write a guide about them bank accounts sooner or later. witha checking account you need a debit card (alternative is a check), and you need to spend on it at least once a month at most banks and at others as high as 5 times a month minimum. they cant just 'shut off' a savings account, so it allows for more flexibility than a checking account.

saving accounts;
no min-e-mum balance
no online banking crap
no montly transactions required

$50 average deposit to open a savings account at most banks
some are as low as $10
others are at $25

Id just get whatever is cheapest, i dont plan on ever using the acct. i just got a checking acct that has no monthly fees for students but in order to get that you have to have either direct deposit, which i have with my other bank. Or make 15 qualifying transactions with the debit card per month.

Regardless of whatever type account you get, just know that even free accounts likely have inactivity fees. If your account has no transactions whatsoever for a period of time (6 months - 1 year usually from my own experience), then suddenly your "free" checking/savings account starts charging you $3-$5 per month. If you do not notice it, they will charge this monthly fee until the account is empty, and will continue to try and charge the fee after that (yes, they will send you a bill!). So whatever type of free account you choose, just be sure to make some sort of transaction every couple of months or so to avoid the hassle.
