Got in a quick hunt today before the rain came down and made at least one cool find! I found an early aluminum token from the E.H. Gulledge Store Oakville, ON c.1915 – 1920. I also found a brass toe-tap, a brass harness buckle and another Isaac Campbell Loop… this makes for 63 IC loops found here! :icon_scratch:

In 1836, Henry Gulledge, a saddler and harness maker from England, established a shop at the southeast corner of Colborne Street (now Lakeshore Road) and Thomas Street. This is one of the two oldest corners in the Town of Oakville, ON. Edmund H. Gulledge took over the store from his father in 1877. The Edmund H. Gulledge Store (b.1851 - d.1947) offered customers a wide variety of wares including Boots and Shoes, Harness, Collars, Trunks, and Whips. In 1897, located on the South East corner of Thomas St. & Lakeshore Rd it burned down circa 1910. In 1915, Gulledge moved back to the original location at 194 Lakeshore Rd East. The lot remained vacant until 1921 when the Bank of Toronto (TD Bank) purchased it and TD sold the building in 2001.

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Your hour hunt was better than mine today. I only found a musket ball and old pocket knife! :)

That is a great find, it looks silver? If so, silver tokens are some of the most collectable & rarist types, well at least this side of the pond.

Well done on the token and #63 loop Dave for the short hunt, liking the token over a coin as it shows part of the local history.

Does this site get ploughed or is it a no till farm? You might of posted this up before but I can't recall.

That's a really neat token. Did it clean up that good with water or did you use another method? Most of the aluminum tokens I've found have been pretty rough.

Now that is a cool find! WTG Dave!! Tokens have always been a passion of mine to screen and detect. My pursuit of them in 1985 led me into my passion of relic hunting starting in 1987. Very nice score again Dave, congrats!!!

Very cool old store token. Congrats on a piece of history.

Thanks very much coyote!
This is only my 4th token in 4 years! :laughing7:
Dave

I'd take a musket ball any day buddy, sure beats cutting through frozen ground eh! :laughing9:
Dave

Your token's in great shape! :icon_thumright: Thanks for addition of it's history and the groovy old photo of the shop! :icon_thumright: Andi

I too am surprised at the condition of this piece, other aluminum tokens I've found in the past have been pretty rough. :icon_scratch:
I think the secret is the soil in this case.
Dave

Nice, i like the pic. that goes with it.

Thanks very much for your post Jack!
I think the 'old photo' of the store gives it some perspective!
Dave

love the tokens and that is a very nice one, congrats

Thank you dirtlooter, this one came out very nice too!
Dave

I love that token! That by itself made for a good hour!
It sure did David... thanks very much for all of your 'likes' of my past posts too! :occasion14:
Dave

That is a great find, it looks silver? If so, silver tokens are some of the most collectable & rarist types, well at least this side of the pond.

I wasn't aware that tokens were ever made in silver Cru?
I only wish this piece had been silver mate!
Dave

Does this site get ploughed or is it a no till farm? You might of posted this up before but I can't recall.

I love finding anything with writing on it Jim, so finding a piece with this much information on it is sweet!
I don't know if this site gets a regular ploughing or not as I've only been detecting it since the end of September.

You can bet I'll be here again in the spring waiting to see what the farmer plants next... please don't let it be corn! :laughing7:
Dave

Nice token & history research.

Thanks very much Trezurehunter!

Nice token Dave and thanks for the info and history on it! Have a wonderful New Year. Hope it is as good to you as 2014 was.
Thank you very much Dave, all the best to you as well my friend! :occasion14:

That's a really neat token. Did it clean up that good with water or did you use another method? Most of the aluminum tokens I've found have been pretty rough.

Just washed it with liquid soap, hot water and a toothbrush. I'm thinking about tumbling it... would that be a sin though? :icon_scratch:
I think the key to the condition to how these come out is 'gentle' soil conditions.
Dave

Wow Larry, you've been at this hobby a long time, now wonder you've found 5 gold coins!
Sure wish I had started detecting when I was younger, now that I'm 50 I figure I have at least 25 'good' years left! :laughing7:

I spent too many years golfing and picking antiques, when I should've been detecting!
Dave

Thanks for your post Bill! :occasion14:
The more info the better as far as I'm concerned!
