No, not rare I'm afraid since 1971 saw the highest mintage at a whopping great 1,454,856,250. That's because we were building stock prior to the switch to decimal currency in that year and the withdrawal of old coins.

All of the 1971 dated 2p coins carried the words "New Pence" on the reverse, and that continued until the word "New" was dropped in 1982. The wording became "Two Pence" from that year onwards. There is however a rare variety from 1983 when a small number of coins were accidentally struck using reverse dies that carried the older wording "New Pence". People sometimes refer to that as "the 1971 reverse" (since that was the year it was first introduced. That has led to confusion (largely created by tabloid newspapers telling people to check their change) that there is a rare variety actually dated 1971. There isn't.

Very common, but always fun to find foreign coins.
