Looks can be deceiving.

Does it test correctly as silver?

Does it weigh correctly?

Will you take $10 for it? (this is actually part of the test)

Yes, it does look like the real mccoy. Also appears it was made into a necklace at one time, because of the hole and the extra silver added around the edge to strengthen it. Hopefully GatorBoy will be by to give his expert opinion, because he has seen a lot more of them than I have.

Items like this can be a very exciting piece.

Someone could have put a hole in it and worn it for years. We don't know, there is no history to it that anyone here knows of.

Just looking at a picture on the computer screen is wholly insufficient to draw any conclusion from.

Will ya take $15?

Found it in a spot at low tide. The area almost seemed like vortex pattern formed 10x20ft area full of deposits . Many modern, this was encrusted in sand, shells. I was told that it was farther north than would be expected. Volusia county.

Maybe was surfers necklace? Another guy said back in the day they wore as necklaces to keep them safe. I just don't know.

Could you take photos of the edges and a pic showing the inside bore of the hole?

I'd bet its real, but a modern jewelry piece. I've seen quite a few in gift shops and ebay. BTW, $16... =)

Alot of things look correct.. It appears to be a Phillip the 5th half reale from the Mexico mint.
That added material could be silver but it's definitely more modern.

Looks like you found a nice vortex, heck of a nice recovery, I would indeed wear that around my neck. Be safe

I wouldn't count it out as being the real deal just because it was found in Volusia County. There have been several unexplained/unconnected finds made in Volusia County. Looks like the real deal to me but I'm far from an expert.

The theory is that there are two ships that broke from the main fleet early on..but after the one that made it back to Spain(Griffon) as the storm approached.. They took a more northerly track... They have yet to be found.
One is believed to be in the area of the cape.

In the past four years I've learned a lot from the dredge that clears the inlet each summer. Several old coins from various nationalities eventually showing on the beaches where this barge makes its near shore dumps. These coins include French, Dutch, German, Spanish, just to name a few. The earliest of these is 1689 with the remainder in the seventeen to mid-eighteen hundreds. So I guess anything is possible on this coast where so much has been lost over the years with a great deal of uncertainty.

PS: I keep hoping for some emerald incrusted rosary or something but.......:laughing7:

Can you take it to a jeweller, and ask them if it's solid silver? They usually have a silver test, and a keen eye.
