Be VERY careful with your solder gun when you build a detector..

Too much heat too long will toast any transistor within seconds. Resistors can get too hot too. Try to learn how to solder first, like a pro. Yes, I've built a couple of my own, a very long time ago when things were easier and simpler. They both worked, but a really useable detector will require a kit and a lot more electronics knowledge because there is so much technical info you will need to know in order to trim trimmers and adjust pots correctly. Sometimes a simple multi-meter is not sufficient to build one with either. Sometimes you will have to deal with RMS voltage and sawtooth waves on a scope, it all depends on the design and instructions of the circuit designer and his info. In such cases you may need a signal injector or tracer of some type and be able to check to see if diodes or transistors or thyristors or step up or step down transformers are putting out or working properly, along with balancing primary and secondary coils, etc..

Lots to consider. It can be fun though.
