"Really Old Brass Lock"

I was wanting to wait, I like to post pics of my finds on a weekly basis; saves a little board space. But! I found this earlier today. And, it took a lot of rubbing-washing but I think it's clean! Any comments as of value-history would be most appreciated ---

Nice lock.I can only read the patent dates on the first pic., but I can't see anything on the second pic.,are there any other markings on it? What size is it?

Made by the Yale & Towne Lock Co. of Stamford, CT. There were at least eight different sizes, ranging from over 3" all the way down to a tiny 3/4".

Re: "Really Old Brass Lock"

Hello,
Thanks for looking at this lock!

I should have placed a tap measure in one of the pics, sorry! It measures slightly over 2 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall. The circle, with the patent date enclosed is exactly the size of a nickel. The "YALE" side does have the manufacturer's name and city upon the hanger section? The lock appears to be all brass. Too bad it didn't come with the key as it would probably work!

Drink it down easy, don't guzzle no beer! :)

Hi GRB great lock, i know how hard it is to come across one in that condition i have been detecting over 20 years and have only come across 2 that were in real good nick, one is similar to yours.
I would have loved to have found the 2 bottom ones in their original condition.

Keep it up and i hope you find many more in the near future.

Regards Raoul ;)

Thanks for the responses!

Raoul,
Great locks you have there! One is almost like mine but is in a lot better condition!

Lumbercamp!
I actually found the lock in my backyard. I almost passed it by believing it to be a larger target due to the way Little Miss S E screamed. I'm glad curiousity got the better of me. :)

What a great find! Congratulations. I was thinking ::) If a locksmith could get it working, and make a key for it; it would look assume on a......treasure chest.

P.S. I think the hole in the shackle is where a small brass clevis was riveted on and held a brass suspension chain for attachment to something like a gate.

Looks like what I would think I'd see on a old west stage strong box. Cool relic...
