Recent NC digs, bullet ID help please

Been hunting a place here in NC, the bullet in question is the .69 cal, doesn't look like a typical minnie ball 69 to me, it has been carved on at the top, the tip was carved off and a couple of the top sides have knife marks. After some research it appears to be a confederate .69 cal Raleigh Pattern, any input will be appreciated. Dug my first fatty injun, 1863, and a nice 1902 V nick. Thx & GL

Great recoveries C59! It definitely looks like a Raleigh but not as "pointy." But as you suggest, a portion of the tip has been taken off. Is the curved back on itself metal object on the left-side of your first photo, made of lead? If so, I've found several of these and wondered what they are. Thanks for posting your photos. N.O.

Some more info that I found researching - "BLT 8. Confederate .69 Cal. Raleigh Laboratory Bullet. M&M # 199. These are associated with North Carolina Troops and for a long time were commonly known as ‘Garibaldi”or “Carcano” bullets among diggers. Modern research has revealed that these and several other patterns were actually produced at the Raleigh School for the deaf, dumb and blind.

Wow! It's not often that one recovers a minie ball with that much specific history - very interesting. Thanks C59 for posting the additional information.

yup Carcano or Raleigh lab...us oldies call em carcano from habit. I assume you dug it around New Bern/Morehead City area

They are found in good numbers in various pockets there. (good numbers meaning more than typically found otherwise). I have one site there (built on now) that produced the .58, .69, & rare .54 varieties of them. Keep at it, a NC button and shotgun slug (Nessler) is there too I bet
