I feel sure that is what this is because it was down in the sand about 3 feet deep with nothing else around it like the red stuff.

Sure looks like a big chunk of red ochre, I've found a few smaller chunks over the years. If so it's a form of hematite that occurs naturally and of various colors ranging from red, orange, yellow, even purple I think and has been used since Paleo times as a dye pigment.
