I know the pictures of the shield nickel don't do it justice at all but after that much time being buried in key west I'm amazed it's even there at all!! I also found this barber dime five feet from the nickel!! I was researching the earliest maps of key west I could find (whiteheads sketch 1838) among others and found a park that used to contain the first courthouse and jail!! Named Jackson square! My trusty ole ace 150 detector did just great but there is so much iron in the soil there I really need a better machine to clean up !! Oh almost forgot I found a naughty token as well!! Really cool token!! Anyway just thought I'd share my finds since all the ideas on how to research an area comes from you guys!! Thanks for the wealth of info everyone! If there's anyone in the Lower keys or key west with a really nice machine I'd be happy to show you some great seldom if ever hit areas that my machine isn't really suited for! Any takers?? Thanks again for lookin guys And happy swingin!! Chris

What would be the best way to try and restore that nickel and the silver dime? So far just a very gentle bath in soapy water and a soft cloth .

The nickel (DONT TAKE MY ADVICE) but for jefferson nickels, buffs, and v nickels I drop them in salt and vinegar for a few days then they either come clean or just a little bit of brushing. Not sure how it works for shield nickels
