Went back to the field I had the Charles I XXPence. Dad & I spent 3 hours gridding with no hammered showing but 8 Roman Coins,Brass Ring, & a Nice Clothes Fastener with sharp hook. Tried 1 hour on a freshly ploughed & slightly rolled field but it was pretty hard going getting the buttons & junk out of the clay lumps (last picture finds from the ploughed land) - 2 Roman Coins & buttons etc..

I seem to have a habit of hitting the best area first :P

At least a couple of the Coins were album quality

We are a little down on buttons this year, only on 728 with 1/2 the year done & we got over 3000 last year

good question, haven't a clue other than possible furniture decor - its copper

Yeah if we had that old land here, we would be digging this stuff consistently as well.

They didn't, therefore the word nudists was created.

Don't forget, people wore clothes much longer in England/Europe than in the USA, so there is much to find. Also there are a number of detectorists who when they find an worn out button just throw it back into the field.

Another thing is that we are glad that the romans and all the rest did not have good taliors or Levi's. The reason you don't find much in the USA after 1850 is that is about when the Levi's were found out, before that most working people just had handmade clothes, and they just fell apart. Also some of the coins were tiny back then, easily lost. For instance the roman 'mini's' that we find in England (local coins), well, the smallest are about 1/8" and you can just make out a man/woman on them with a pattern or something on the other side. No wonder they got lost.

The ring is interesting & solid/well made. Probably late 18th - early 19th C but I'm not sure.

Wow, you and CruDad are slipping....

Only count & keep these bloody things because of you, you started a button obsession. We will try harder, but the sites we target this year are Roman (with few buttons I guessing). Our button fields will not be looked at this year.
