Good question. I meant specifically operating the Explorer II. Have read that I should dig most any target that creates a "silence." Supposedly a great target causes this. Any ideas?

If what you mean by "silent" is null, I thought the machine nulled on the targets you do not want to find and sounded on good targets. At least that's what the manual and book I am reading indicates. If it goes silent on good targets isn't that backwards of the way it should be?

With the Explorer II when the signal is nulled (goes silent no thresshold sound) it simply means you are over a signal that has been masked or blocked. If the signal is that of a good tareget then yes it is a good target if it is a piece of junk then it is not. A nulled sound does not mean good or bad, That is determined by what you block or mask. The Explorer II is a different beast but I like it.

It is usually a bid peice of iron that nulls it out.
Ans it depends on how you have your detector set up.

Cool, I thought that the detector gave an overload indication on large pieces of iron. Thanks for your input :-)

usually large peices of iron put my machine into overload, shown by the word '' OVERLOAD" on the display..the small peices will null out unless machine is set as i posted above.. then they will show up in the earphones and display..........
