RN Gold Button

I had a few hours this weekend to detect an old cart path and small field out here on MV. As I worked the cart path all I managed was two Indian heads, dates unreadable . As I entered the small field I got a got hit 12" deep , it turned out to be a piece of grape shot, often fired from passing British ships. About 1/2 an hour later I pulled a smaller musket ball. As I headed out of the field I got a crisp hit of 80 at 8" with my Tesoro. As I flipped out the plug I could see gold, and having pulled a 1787 gold guinea last year on MV , I thought I had another !! When I pulled it from the pug I could feel where the button shank had been. Still a cool find ,and after seeing what the uniform looked like it's amazing to think of an officer standing in that field !!

Funny how many times you get fooled by a gold button for a few milliseconds.

It's a massive leap of faith to think this backmark was only used on officers jackets, because way more were used by civilians.

And not even a leap of faith unless you believe some officers coats had plain buttons. These were officers, a small %, so pretty sure they would be wearing the correct issued buttons for their position or rank.

Yes, I just wasn't sure enough that there wasn't an unknown documented case.

Maybe a leap or not ?? , I try to keep some places private in respect to the land owners. Let's just say this area of the island " the brickyard " has been in private ownership since the 1700's. Many British ships used the bricks as ballast . The adjacent field was used a camp by many ships including a fleet in 1812. I have pulled many military button and other artifacts from this field. Sadly the owner of the 70+acres passed last year and the land is being devided and sold off. Last year I had the honor of walking a living 4 star admiral about this magnificent property and gave him some of the Navy related buttons. I'm not much of a speculator but this small field overlooking the cove has only produced military itens. Whatever garment it fell from ?? ,the joke was on me thinking I had another gold coin !!!
