Hi Rob, the brooch is indeed roman. the catch-plate and the pine are missing, but the brooch itself is a common type of brooch in the German provinces of the Roman empire. Congratulations to you on having found such a unusual gilt brooch.!!

Hi Folkert, I was just a little unsure because of the ridge across the back,i've not seen that before on English ones.
