We got togged up to brave the weather & got far less rain than expected, so it was an OK session - 3 hours. (plus the wind had died off)
We are now gridding the Southern edges & the coins go far lower than we expected, still no Roman silver after 200+ bronzes!

15 Scrappies
Lead Token
Tudor Clothes Fastener
Medieval strapend
Mystery Roman Artefact (broken)
Roman Bracelet frag
The hammered silver Penny of Edward I, nearly made me swallow my heart! For a second the 'golden hue' (never had one quite like it) made me think gold hammered.:laughing7:

You're right Crusader, the sheen on that Edward 1 would likely put anyone's heart in their throat for a moment. Beautiful example regardless of what it's made of.

I've done a side by side (normal Ed I), to show the difference.

Any thoughts on what they may have alloyed that silver with to produce that color? It's distinct enough that it has to have a significant percentage of something else in it, but I'm far from an expert on ancient coinage. Copper maybe?

no idea really, I'm assuming it's normal silver but the ground conditions have affected it. It was on a very wet slope.

Hmmm. Wonder what mineralization or chemicals would lend it a pale yellow/golden color? That would be interesting to figure out, might come in handy with later finds too.

Cru , I'm actually surprised that those hammered coins don't come out tarnished black considering that they've been in the ground
for 500/1000 years- i'm assuming that they are nearly a sterling alloy ? Excellent Finds as usual !

Your mystery broken bronze item is a Roman seal box lid, one weird looking Eddy :o that would make any body's heart skip a beat.

Edward I had the best fineness of Silver in the whole of Europe, it was nearly pure.

PS. The ploughed soil often cleans the coins, some come out new others black. I never clean other than with soapy water. I've had 2000 year old coins come out bright silver, some come out completely black.

I can see how the color of that coin could throw your thoughts toward gold! Great recovery!

Chemicals, I would guess. They are still dumping black crap on the fields as we speak. Some of it burnt out material used in a microbrewery.

That's a real different toning to the hammered for sure, congrats on the nice find.

Brewer's waste can't all that bad, cereal & Hops, and some stink. It's better than the e-waste that's full of burnt aluminum crap which totally screws up a field forever.
