We believe my Grandmother had it, and now my Mom says she thinks she's like that too. Overcast days just make her feel very down, even though she knows there is no reason for the feeling. If the sun is shining she feels fine, but let it be gloomy for days at a time, and she gets very blue. She is alone most of the time too, so I don't think that helps. However, I like cloudy days! I think they have a flavor all thier own. Can't say as the light ever helped my Grandmother, Mom can't tell if does her any good either. But with both women, there is a notable change in the mood.

I think a lot of it has been folded into depression as far as medicine has been concerned...

It has so many similar symptoms that it is considered just a short term version of depression in a lot of mental health circles.

As far as I know, only the reasons behind it differ. (lack of activity, lack of sunshine, cold weather, etc.)

Sorry i couldn't be of more assistance.

I think I might have this.

I've never been into the holidays of this time of year. On top of that, I saw my Mom draw her last breath on this day in 2001. Seems to have made it even worse...
Need help, please...

When life kicks you in the teeth..you either lay down and take it or take back control of your life!!! When you are down one of the nicest things you can do is help someone who is worse off then you...see if there is some volunteer work you can do at a kids hospital, church, fire station...something to make it all seem worth it...deliver toys to the needy anything to change this time of year back into focus...not the crap that happens every year at the stores....but something that can last all year long...dress up like a clown and go to one of the hospitals and work with the little ones!!! there must be 100's of ideas that this forum could think of for you....make your mom proud of you so you just stop remembering her ending....she wouldn't want you to think of it....she would want you to embrace life. Besides it really pisses off the devil when he sees you pick yourself up and get 'er done.

Well, for the last couple of years I was really involved with the church. I volunteered to help serve meals on Thanksgiving, joined in Living Nativities and all, but, I just can't shake the pain of this time of year.
Tee, thanks for your input; it means so much..

I use to suffer from SADS when I lived in the Ozarks (Missouri). Winters there suck and spending months without much sunshine always depressed me. I moved back to Florida after three years in Mo. The SADS went away. I live in PR now and have still not had any SADS symptoms. If you live in such a climate like Missouri, I suggest you get this special type of lamp that replaces sunshine and sit under it and read a nice book.

What kind of bulb? A fluorescent? Incandescent? I know a little about some of the different light spectrums...
Could they be a mercury vapor or HID? :dontknow:

Scott....These aren't ordinary lamps that you use for getting a sun tan. It's like a little box that give out the UV light of actual day light. They aren't too expensive..(well not over here they aren,t). You should be able to get one quite easily at your local pharmacy, or even a department store. You only have to sit for about an hour each day, and can quite easily read a book or just relax. They are very good.
Best of Luck Scott, and remember we have past the shortest day now, and the only way is up.

Thanks everyone for your help. Seem like I've had this since I was a kid. Who'd a thunk it was a real affliction?
Gonna look into some of those lites. I'll talk to the fellow at the drug store. Maybe he can tell me more...
