So Iā€™ve had little luck selling any work by listed artists unless I let it go for $20 (in which case the shipping usually exceeds the sale price). I had a chagal last year that sold well, but unless itā€™s a household name it seems like art simply does not move online. Do you guyā€™s generally sell this stuff at auction / flea markets?

Yes to both. I have had good luck selling artwork at flea markets and local auctions. Both of these are very visual mediums, where a person walks by and sees something they didn't know they were looking for. A painting by an unknown artist I picked up for $8 at a yard sale just sold for $95 this week at auction.

With online venues, buyers usually search by artist or style. Unless you have a very desirable artist or specific subject or style, it will sit a long time and may never sell.

For paintings, a regional or even larger auction will always beat ebay, even after commissions. Just have to find one whoā€™ll take it. But yes.

Flea market or consignment with a gallery specializing in the type of art in question is the way to go. Hard to get the ā€˜essenceā€™ of a painting across in pictures, and there are relatively few art buyers checking eBay who arenā€™t looking for an absolute steal.

You may also try Instagram, which is visually oriented and attracts some sophisticated niche buyers.

Thanks all. Iā€™m going to grab a table at an antique fleamarket in lambertville nj. Drag a bunch of art and ā€œtoo bigā€ā€™/ ā€œtoo much hassle to shipā€ items. I figure Iā€™ll take a 30 pack and some buddies and make a day of it.
